IOL exchange of an IOL that resides in the capsular sac is performed under topical anesthesia, two weeks after the original cataract-implant surgery. The rationale behind the selection of the type of anesthesia for patients undergoing an exchange procedure is discussed.

After completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to understand the factors involved when selecting the type of anesthesia for more complex procedures such as IOL exchange.
